While the summer sky invites us to revel in the sprawling open clusters of Sagittarius, drifting just across the border into Ophiuchus brings us to a different class of deep-sky treasure. Here, roughly eight degrees north of the fiery red supergiant Antares, resides Messier 19. Unlike the perfectly round, snow globe-like appearance common to most globular clusters, M19 immediately strikes the patient observer as beautifully deformed. Because it sits remarkably close to our galaxy’s turbulent heart—just about 6,500 light-years from the galactic center—strong gravitational tides have stretched this ancient metropolis of stars into a distinctly oval shape, making it the most elongated globular cluster in the entire Messier catalog.
Sweeping the area with a pair of 10x50 binoculars on a crisp, moonless night reveals M19 as a bright, fuzzy star with a distinctly egg-shaped silhouette, nestled nicely within a rich field of background suns. Stepping up to a modest 4-inch telescope at 80x, the cluster begins to reveal its true personality. It sports a highly compressed, intensely bright core that appears off-center, pushed toward the eastern edge of the glow. The western side of the cluster slopes away more gently into the dark sky, creating a subtle asymmetry that is both baffling and delightful to contemplate through the eyepiece.
An 8-inch or larger reflector at high power truly breaks the seal on this cosmic vault, peeling away the smooth outer haze into dozens of glittering, pinpoint stars. The celestial architecture transforms into a dense gridlock of elderly, low-mass suns, their soft silver light contrasting beautifully with the golden-hued field stars nearby. As you sit at the eyepiece and watch M19 drift through the field of view, it is easy to marvel at how this resilient stellar city has managed to hold itself together, despite the relentless, distorting tug-of-war playing out in the deepest core of the Milky Way.
