NGC 3087

Lying roughly 140 million light-years distant, it glows gently around visual magnitude 11—a serene island of ancient stars tucked into a faint, forgotten corner of the late-spring sky. 

Through a 4- or 5-inch refractor under dark, transparent skies, NGC 3087 presents a small, smooth puff of grayish light. It spans about 2 arcminutes across, revealing a soft, circular envelope that gradually brightens toward an unyielding central core. Elliptical galaxies like this lack the flashy spiral arms or vibrant dust lanes of their galactic cousins, but there is a distinct, quiet charm to tracing their delicate, ethereal edges as they melt seamlessly into the blackness of the background void. 

Nudged up to higher powers in an 8- or 10-inch reflector, the galaxy’s compact structure comes into clearer focus. The bright nucleus takes on a nearly stellar appearance, anchored inside a dense, concentrated central hub. Observers using careful averted vision will notice the outer halo stretching slightly into a round-to-slightly-oval disk. NGC 3079

In the western flank of Ursa Major, roughly a third of the way along a line from Phad (Gamma Ursae Majoris) to Talitha (Iota Ursae Majoris), lies the striking edge-on spiral NGC 3079. Shining at magnitude 10.8, this dynamic galaxy is a favorite target for observers seeking dramatic edge-on profiles outside the usual showcase list. Though often overlooked in favor of the Great Bear's brighter, face-on highlights, sliding your telescope into this field reveals a sleek sliver of starlight tilted almost directly into our line of sight.

Through a 4-inch refractor on a dark, crisp night, NGC 3079 presents a slender, needle-like streak oriented north-northwest to south-southeast. The galaxy stretches roughly 7 arcminutes long, tapering to delicate, gossamer tips that evaporate gently into the dark backdrop. A tiny, bright nucleus sits anchored at the middle, while a trio of 8th- and 9th-magnitude Milky Way field stars are positioned just to the south, serving as helpful signposts for tracing the full extent galaxy's subtle, low-surface-brightness halo.

NGC 3077

Anchoring the northern sky in Ursa Major, the famous pair of Bode’s Galaxy (M81) and the Cigar Galaxy (M82) commands almost all the attention from star-hoppers passing through the region. Yet if you nudge your telescope just under three degrees east-southeast of M81, you will stumble upon the third brightest member of this nearby group: NGC 3077. Discovered by William Herschel in 1789, this magnitude-9.9 peculiar galaxy serves as a delightful target for observers looking to venture slightly off the beaten path.

In a small refractor under dark rural skies, NGC 3077 appears as a compact, bright oval glow with a prominent, almost stellar nucleus framed within a smooth, soft halo. In the eyepiece, it masquerades as an innocuous elliptical galaxy, but high-resolution photography reveals a far more chaotic nature. Tidal interactions with its massive neighbors, M81 and M82, have violently disrupted NGC 3077, igniting intense regions of star formation. This gravitational tug-of-war has laced the core with dark, wispy dust filaments—a structure reminiscent of M82's turbulent center, though on a somewhat more delicate scale.
