NGC 103

Tucked away in the rich, star-dusted fields of Cassiopeia, NGC 103 is a delicate open cluster that often gets overlooked in favor of its showier celestial neighbors like Messier 103 or the ET Cluster. Located just a short hop east of 4th-magnitude Epsilon (ε) Cassiopeiae, this modest stellar grouping sits roughly 9,800 light-years away, quietly waiting for an observer with a keen eye and a clear, dark night. Discovered by John Herschel in 1829, it presents a delightful challenge for backyard astronomers who enjoy coaxing faint, fine detail out of the deep sky.

Through a modest 4-inch refractor at low power, NGC 103 reveals itself as a faint, ghostly smudge—a soft, subtle glow against a glittering backdrop of background Milky Way stars. Step up the magnification to around 100x or 150x, however, and the haze begins to resolve into a neat, compact swarm of faint suns. Spanning just about 5 arcminutes in diameter, the cluster's brighter members, shining around 11th and 12th magnitude, form an elongated, wedge-like shape that points enticingly toward the southwest.

In larger apertures, such as an 8- or 10-inch reflector, the cluster truly opens up like a tiny jewel box, revealing a couple dozen pinpoint stars sprinkled over its subtle central concentration. Observing NGC 103 requires patience and averted vision to fully appreciate its faint outer members, which seem to flicker in and out of view like distant fireflies. It serves as a wonderful reminder that you don't always need grand, brilliant nebulae or sprawling clusters to enjoy a rewarding night at the eyepiece—sometimes the quietest stellar corners offer the sweetest views.

NGC 45


Low in the southern autumn sky, riding the quiet expanse of Cetus the Sea Monster, lies NGC 45—a ghostly spiral that rewards the patient observer equipped with dark skies and steady optics. Discovered by John Herschel in November 1835, this 10th-magnitude island universe rests roughly 22 million light-years away, lingering near the outskirts of the famous Sculptor Group. Where neighboring showpieces like NGC 253 dazzle with intense surface brightness, NGC 45 offers a far subtler allure. It is a quintessential low surface brightness spiral (type SA(s)dm), its star-forming energy spread thin across an expansive disk with virtually no central bulge to anchor the eye. 

To locate this elusive target, star-hop about 10 degrees west-northwest of the magnificent Silver Coin Galaxy (NGC 253) toward the barren borders where Cetus meets Sculptor. Through a small to medium backyard aperture—such as a 4-inch refractor or a 6-inch reflector under rural skies—NGC 45 reveals itself as a delicate, faint oval of softly glowing light. The galaxy’s light is diffusely scattered over an expansive 8.5 by 5.9 arcminutes. Rather than presenting a sharp nucleus, the faint glow fades seamlessly into the background, demanding averted vision and a low-magnification, wide-field eyepiece to contrast its frail edge against the ink-black backdrop of deep space. 

Step up to an 8- to 10-inch aperture under pristine conditions, and this ghostly cloud begins to display its unique structure. Unlike classic spirals with sharp, well-defined spiral arms, NGC 45 features a patchy, amorphous texture—a mosaic of subtle stellar knotting woven around a tiny, distorted core. A fine field star resting near the northern margin of the glow offers a helpful anchor for the eye, contrasting sharply against the galaxy's soft, unresolved haze. Viewing NGC 45 is a testament to the quiet magic of visual astronomy: a chance to sit at the eyepiece, slow down, and trace the fragile light of a universe without a center.
