Just 45 arcminutes southeast of the magnificent Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) in Ursa Major lies the peculiar dwarf spiral NGC 5474. While most backyard observers naturally gravitate toward M101’s sprawling grand design, sliding your telescope less than a degree away reveals a captivating little neighbor that demands attention on a transparent night. At magnitude 10.8, this dwarf galaxy is often overlooked, but it offers a fascinating study in gravitational distortion for observers equipped with modest apertures and a patient eye.
Through a 4-inch refractor under dark skies, NGC 5474 appears as a faint, ghostly patch of gray light with a low overall surface brightness. What makes this galaxy particularly intriguing is its lopsided personality: unlike typical spirals whose bright cores sit neatly in the center, NGC 5474 features an off-center bright nucleus offset toward its northern edge. Gravitational tides from its massive neighbor M101 have pulled this dwarf’s star-forming disk out of alignment, giving it a delightfully misshapen, egg-like glow that rewards careful averted vision.
Stepping up to an 8- or 10-inch reflector at medium magnification sharpens the view considerably. The bright, stellar-like nucleus becomes prominent, anchored within a soft, asymmetric halo that fades gently into the background sky. Deep photographs reveal blue spiral arms packed with energetic HII regions, but visually, observers with larger apertures will trace subtle mottling across the southern expanse of its displaced disk.
