It lies some 52,000 light-years away on the outer fringes of the galactic halo, quietly residing in a field sprinkled with faint, delicate foreground stars.

NGC 5457 (M101)

Perched just above the handle of the Big Dipper in Ursa Major, the magnificent Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) is a favorite target for spring deep-sky observers, though it presents a notoriously split personality at the eyepiece.
