NGC 6522

Glowing amid the rich, star-dusted starfields of Sagittarius, the 8th-magnitude globular cluster NGC 6522 offers a charming target for observers willing to look past the usual summer showcase objects. Located roughly 25,000 light-years away within the Milky Way’s central bulge, this ancient orb sits directly in Baade’s Window—a clear dust lane through the galactic plane that permits a rare view into our galaxy’s crowded interior. Finding it is a pleasant hop: start at 3rd-magnitude Alnasl (Gamma² Sagittarii), the sharp tip of the Teapot’s spout, and slide less than a degree to the northwest. 

Through my 4-inch refractor at around 90x, NGC 6522 reveals itself as a bright, compact glow set against a breathtakingly dense carpet of background stars. The core is surprisingly intense and concentrated—typical for a core-collapsed cluster—and grades outward to a delicate, soft haze nearly 9 arcminutes across. A moderate 7- or 8-inch aperture at 150x begins to grain the outer halo, yielding faint, fleeting hints of tiny, pinprick member stars hovering right at the threshold of resolution against the rich Milky Way backlight. 

While you are centered on NGC 6522, don’t move the telescope—a delightful surprise shares the eyepiece view. Just 16 arcminutes to the east-southeast lies its twin companion, the smaller and somewhat fainter globular cluster NGC 6528. Seeing these two ancient stellar swarms framed side-by-side in a single medium-power field of view is a visually stunning sight, offering a memorable glimpse into the very heart of our galaxy.

NGC 6520

In the rich, luminous fields of Sagittarius, open cluster NGC 6520 sits like a scattering of brilliant crushed jewels spilled onto a velvet blanket. Through a modest 4-inch refractor, this compact gathering of young, hot stars spans only about 6 arcminutes across, yet it commands immediate attention against the dense backdrop of the Milky Way’s bulge. Dozens of faint suns glimmer within its boundaries, anchored by a brighter 9th-magnitude star guarding its center. The cluster possesses a wonderfully energetic personality—its members cluster tightly, giving the impression of a miniature, shimmering swarm that demands higher magnification to truly parse out its glittering individual components. 

What elevates NGC 6520 from a pleasant deep-sky stop into an unforgettable visual experience is its immediate neighbor: the famous dark nebula Barnard 86. Resting directly along the west-northwestern flank of the cluster, this void—often dubbed the "Ink Spot"—presents a stark, arresting contrast. While NGC 6520 glitters with starlight, Barnard 86 looks like a drop of jet-black India ink spilled across the heavens, completely swallowing the distant background light. The dark, cold molecular cloud serves as a silent reminder of cosmic origins, containing the very gas and dust from which the young, blue-white stars of NGC 6520 coalesced just millions of years ago. 

To find this dynamic duo, center your finder scope roughly three degrees north-northwest of Gamma Sagittarii (Alnasl) at the tip of the Teapot’s spout. On a dark night, low-power eyepieces will be framing both the cluster and the dark nebula alongside the striking, reddish hue of 7th-magnitude star HD 164562, which rests at the western rim of Barnard 86. Bumping the magnification up to around 100x transforms the field, letting you trace the crisp, ink-black perimeter of the nebula while pinpointing the bright, twinkling points of NGC 6520—a exquisite lesson in visual contrast and stellar evolution that easily makes this region one of the summer sky's finest treats.

NGC 6517

To find NGC 6517, begin your journey in the eastern reaches of Ophiuchus, where we look roughly 700 light-years above the dust-choked plane of the Milky Way. Nudge your scope just north of the border with Aquila, aiming a couple of degrees southwest of 4th-magnitude Nu (ν) Ophiuchi. This subtle 10th-magnitude globular cluster sits embedded in a soft starfield, easy to slide right past if you are sweeping too quickly. A modest 4-inch refractor at low power reveals it as little more than a tiny, hazy smudge—a ghostly, out-of-focus star lingering quietly among a few faint, scattered field stars.

Step up the magnification, and the cluster's true personality begins to surface. Through an 8- to 10-inch telescope at 150x or more, NGC 6517 reveals a strikingly compact, intensely bright core wrapped in a delicate, grainy halo. The object is so compressed (a class II globular, though some sources put it in class IV) that its dense nucleus holds back its secrets fiercely. Rather than resolving into a glittering spray of individual stellar diamonds like M13, it presents a smooth, mottled glow that gently fades at the edges, refusing to break up easily even under steady night skies.

Physically, NGC 6517 is a distant and heavily reddened giant, anchored roughly 35,000 light-years from Earth and deep within the gravitational pull of the Galactic bulge. The light we see has pushed through thick veils of interstellar dust along our line of sight, dimming its true brilliance and shifting its color. Through a large amateur aperture of 14 inches or more, a keen eye under dark skies can finally pick out a tiny sprinkling of extremely faint 15th-magnitude peripheral stars, shimmering like delicate dust motes caught on the threshold of visibility.

NGC 6514 (M20)

Riding high in the rich summer star fields of Sagittarius, just 2 degrees northwest of the grand Lagoon Nebula (M8), lies one of the most captivating targets for backyard observers: the Trifid Nebula, Messier 20. Discovered by Charles Messier in 1764, this 6th-magnitude cosmic bouquet combines an emission nebula, a reflection nebula, a dark nebula, and an open star cluster all within a single field of view. Small binoculars easily reveal M20 as a soft, hazy patch surrounding a delicate double star, sitting quietly against the luminous backdrop of the Milky Way. 

In a modest 4-inch refractor at moderate magnification, M20 reveals its true personality. The southern portion of the glow is dominated by the bright emission cloud, brightly illuminated by the multiple-star system HN 40 at its heart. Careful averted vision uncovers the intricate lanes of dark dust—cataloged by E.E. Barnard as Barnard 85—that carve the glowing gas into three distinct lobes, earning the object its famous moniker "Trifid." Just to the north, a subtler, detached haze marks the reflection nebula, clinging softly around a 7th-magnitude star like a faint blue halo. 

Stepping up to a 10-inch aperture or larger transforms M20 from a faint whisper into a breathtaking visual canvas. With a narrowband or OIII filter, the bright emission lobes pop with remarkable contrast, revealing irregular, mottled edges where hot gas collides with cold interstellar dust. The dark lanes are no longer simple gaps, but detailed, ink-black rivers showing subtle variations in width and opacity as they converge near the central star cluster. It is a quintessential deep-sky gem—a place where stellar birth and cosmic dust weave an unforgettable scene for anyone willing to linger at the eyepiece.
