Discovered by Charles Messier in 1764, this 6th-magnitude cosmic bouquet combines an emission nebula, a reflection nebula, a dark nebula, and an open star cluster all within a single field of view. Small binoculars easily reveal M20 as a soft, hazy patch surrounding a delicate double star, sitting quietly against the luminous backdrop of the Milky Way.
In a modest 4-inch refractor at moderate magnification, M20 reveals its true personality. The southern portion of the glow is dominated by the bright emission cloud, brightly illuminated by the multiple-star system HN 40 at its heart.
