NGC 6205 (M13)

NGC 6171 (M107)

Found in the sprawling body of Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer, Messier 107 (NGC 6171) is a gentle, unpretentious globular cluster that often gets overlooked in favor of its flashy summer neighbors. Discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1782, this 8th-magnitude stellar swarm sits roughly 20,000 light-years from Earth. Center the cluster in a 4-inch aperture telescope at low power, and you will find a round, ghostly patch of light about 10 arcminutes across that brightens gradually toward a broad, subtle core. Unlike the intensely compressed centers of M13 or M15, M107 is notably open and loose—a class IX globular on the Shapley-Sawyer concentration scale. Cranking the magnification up to around 100x on a crisp, moonless night begins to yield a pleasant sprinkled texture across the halo, with tiny stellar points teasing the eye near the outer boundaries.

Step up to a 10-inch or larger reflector, and M107 transforms into a sparkling tapestry of faint, 13th-magnitude pinpoint stars scattered across its faint veil. NGC 6144

The brilliant orange heart of Scorpius, 1st-magnitude Antares, is often our guidepost for exploring the rich star fields of the summer Milky Way. Most observers automatically sweep 1.3° to the west of Antares to marvel at Messier 4, a broad, bright globular cluster easily visible in modest optics. However, the discerning stargazer who pauses to examine the neighborhood will find another, much more secretive stellar city lurking just under a degree to the northeast of the red supergiant. NGC 6144 is a faint, distant globular cluster that hides in plain sight, perpetually overshadowed by the glare of its dazzling neighbor and the dusty, colorful veil of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex. 

Through a small refractor under typical suburban skies, NGC 6144 presents a delicate observing challenge. While M4 resolves into a grand, granular splash of light, NGC 6144 appears as little more than a ghost of a cluster—a pale, circular smudge of faint light hovering against a crowded backdrop. At magnitude 9.0 and spanning about 7.4 arcminutes, its low surface brightness makes it a fine barometer for atmospheric transparency. A key trick to catching this subtle prize is keeping Antares just outside your field of view; hiding the star's overwhelming glare behind the edge of the eyepiece allows the cluster’s soft, misty glow to gently emerge from the dark. 

Stepping up to an 8- to 10-inch aperture at moderate magnification rewards the observer with a far more intriguing view. The cluster begins to reveal its Shapley-Sawyer class XI nature—a loosely concentrated structure where individual 13th-magnitude stars slowly sparkle into view across its fragile halo. Rather than the intense, blazing core typical of tightly bound globulars like M80, NGC 6144 offers a dusting of faint star-points suspended in a round, mottled haze. It serves as a classic deep-sky wonder, reminding us that the sky's quietest, most subtle secrets often lie right alongside its most famous showpieces.

NGC 6121 (M4)

In the soft, deep dark of Scorpius, just a whisper west of glowing Antares, lies Messier 4—one of the nearest and most accessible globular clusters in the summer sky. NGC 6093 (M80)

Through a modest backyard telescope, M80 does not immediately reveal its true, ferocious nature. Tucked quietly into the rich, velvety folds of Scorpius—roughly halfway between the fierce red heart of Antares and the regal pale star Graffias—this globular cluster presents itself as a bright, highly condensed marble of starlight, almost planetary in its intensity. At low magnifications, it mimics a glowing comet core stripped of its tail. But boost the power on a crisp, steady summer night, and the soft outer haze gives way to a glittering, granular halo, framing a core so incredibly dense that the individual stars seem to melt into a single, blazing nucleus.

What sets M80 apart from its neighboring globulars is this core density—a hyper-crowded stellar metropolis roughly 28,000 light-years from Earth. Deep within this ancient gravitational trap, hundreds of thousands of stars are packed into a spatial volume scarcely larger than the distance between our Sun and its nearest neighbors.
