To find Messier 13 on a clear May evening, nudge your scope toward Hercules and look for the classic "Keystone" asterism. Perched roughly a third of the way along the western edge between Eta and Zeta Herculis, this famous Great Globular Cluster yields easily even to modest optics. In a standard finder scope or pair of 10x50 binoculars, it announces itself as a bright, fuzzy patch—a ghostly, circular glow suspended against a backdrop of distant field stars, hinting at the stellar megalopolis waiting just beyond resolution.
Swing a 4-inch aperture to bear at low power, and the bright, misty halo sharpens into a distinctly granulating sphere with an intensely glowing core.
