NGC 4051

In the southern reaches of Ursa Major, roughly a degree northeast of 4.4-magnitude Psi Ursae Majoris, lies the striking Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051. Shining at magnitude 10.2, this intermediate spiral is one of the brightest active galaxies in the spring sky, yet it often takes a backseat to the Great Bear’s flashier Messier targets. Slipping your scope south toward the Ursa Major Cluster reveals a jewel well worth hunting down—a dynamic visual system anchored by a supermassive black hole aggressively feeding at its core.

In a 4-inch refractor under dark rural skies, NGC 4051 reveals itself as a bright, elongated oval of hazy light stretching roughly northwest to southeast. The galaxy's defining visual trait is its remarkably intense, stellar-like nucleus, which blazes brightly against a soft, diffuse outer envelope. Classified as a type 1 Seyfert galaxy, NGC 4051’s core is known to fluctuate in brightness over time, although the amplitude at visual wavelengths is perhaps too low for visual observers to monitor.

Nudging the aperture up to an 8- or 10-inch reflector at high magnification brings the subtle structure of the galaxy’s disk into play. The piercing, pinpoint core remains the star of the show, but a careful tap of the telescope tube or a touch of averted vision will reveal a gentle, mottled haze tracing the galaxy’s delicate spiral arms. While long-exposure photographs unveil sweeping dusty lanes and bright star-forming knots wrapped around the core, visually only the general outline of this structure can be seen with large amateur telescopes.
