Positioned high in the northern sky near the border between Ursa Major and Draco lies NGC 4036, a bright, edge-on lenticular galaxy that rewards deep-sky visual observers with a sleek, glowing profile. Shining at magnitude 10.7, this island universe sits roughly 70 million light-years distant and forms an attractive, close-knit pairing with its neighbor NGC 4041, located just 17 arcminutes to the northeast. While many observers sweep right past this region on their way to more famous Messier targets, centering your eyepiece on NGC 4036 reveals an elegant spindle of light anchored in a rich star field.

Through a small-to-modest refractor under clear, dark skies, NGC 4036 appears as a prominent, elongated streak oriented east-southeast to west-northwest. The galaxy displays a smooth, elliptical outer envelope that tapers symmetrically at both ends, framing a noticeably brighter, compact central core. Even at low powers, its edge-on profile gives it a distinctly sharp, needle-like presence against the dark void. Bumping up the magnification slightly helps isolate its delicate, subtle boundary, which seems to melt almost imperceptibly into the background sky.
